Did you have your Ice Dam hacked at this winter ?

Posted by Dan MacDonald on Mar 10, 2015 2:11:14 PM

This winter we had over 100 calls an hour everyday over a 4 week span in Feburaury. In the metrowest area we had over 90" inches of snow in that span. A new record for snowfall in that short of time frame. We also had over 40 days of below average temperatures, add all these elements together and you have huge ice dams issues !! We tried to get to every call we could but just wasnt possible with the volume of calls. Wheather it was our commercial flat roof customers concerned with the weight and roof collapse or it was residential sloped roofs leaking into homes and causing damage. We at Robert Evans Jr Contracting recommmended removing the snow above the dams to help alleviate the dam and leaving mother nature take care of the massive ice . NOT hacking at the ice with hammers ,drills, ice piks, etc.

This customer had her ice dam removed from her 8 yr. old roof by a company her insurance company sent over, causing extreme damage. Now she's left with having to replace her entire roof!!

Natick Roof

Posted by Robert Evans on Jul 23, 2014 12:38:00 PM

On July 3 a micro burst hit the downtownNatickarea ripping shingles off roofs and knocking down trees. It also ripped the roof off the Natick Outdoor Store. After spending July 4 on the roof at the Store we were able secure the rubber ahead of the on coming hurricane.

The roof that was ripped off we had installed in 1997 cutting it short of its life span.

The week following we were able to install a new Firestone fully adhered rubber roof with a better R-value insulation then what we had original installed. New four inch roof drains were sumped down to the roof deck. All new shop fabricated aluminum roof edging was install around the perimeter to finish off the jobphoto2MA30991312 0004 resized 600photo1MA30991312 0003 resized 600photo4MA30991312 0006 resized 600

Roof Maintenance

Posted by Robert Evans on Jun 18, 2014 3:17:00 PM

Customer whose roof we installed in 1997 called and said he had a couple of small leaks.

Upon inspection of we discovered trees over grown on the roof and some of the limbs had penetrated the rubber, thus causing some leaks. The gutters were completely filled and the neighborhood kids had been throwing all sorts of debris on the roof.

I called the customer back after inspection and told him what I had discovered. Since his warranty had run out and the roof had been neglected that there would be a fee to repair, we give him another option. Which was for a fee we would go over the entire roof and perform all repairs and preventive maintenance and give him a three year warranty.photo1MA30986752 0001 resized 600photo3MA30986752 0003 resized 600photo4MA30986752 0004 resized 600photo5MA30986752 0005 resized 600

Skylites

Posted by Robert Evans on May 9, 2014 2:51:00 PM

With all the old buildings in theBostonarea there are a lot of old skylites, the way to fix the leaks around the glass was caulking. There was no feasible solution to replacing them. Within the past couple years you can now have skylites made to fit existing curbs at a reasonable cost.photoMA30980345 0003 resized 600

Rubber roof maintenance

Posted by Robert Evans on Apr 17, 2014 1:26:00 PM

Big customer inMilfordcalled about a roof leak on a roof we installed in 1999. Upon inspection of the roof it turned out that the leak was not the roof, but an HVAC unit that was leaking. The labor warranty on the roof has expired so the customer has purchased an extended warranty through us for an additional five years. This entails inspecting the roof twice a year, performing preventative maintenance and cleaning the roof drains, as it turned out the roof needs nothing at this time. With rubber roofs some time all it takes and some minor maintenance to extend the life of the roof, and some times without regular maintenance it could end up being a whole roof replacement.pic 101 resized 600

Roof Framingham

Posted by Robert Evans on Apr 5, 2014 3:54:00 PM

Boyle Bros. funeral home in Framingham discovered a leak this winter and called us to look at it, on the flat section of there building a rubber was installed over a tar and gravel roof. A half inch fiber board was mechanically fastened over the tar and gravel, the problem with fiber board in a go over application is it acts like a sponge and sucks up water before showing any signs of a leak.

In Boyle Bros. case the roof had been leaking for years from a hole in the rubber and until the weight of this winters snow squeezed the water from the saturated fiber board.

We stripped off the roof and installed a new rubber roof with half inch recovery board instead of fiber board. With a warranty of ten years on our labor and fifteen years on materials we included an inspect of the roof in the fallphoto1MA30970304 0003 resized 600photo3MA30970304 0005 resized 600photo4MA30970304 0006 resized 600

Flat roofs

Posted by Robert Evans on Mar 5, 2014 9:02:00 PM

This winter has been very hard on flat roofs with the snow loads and persistent cold. Flat roofs are not maintenance free if the roof is eight years or old it might be time for an inspection, especially if you had leaks. Just because you had a leak doesn't mean the roof needs to be replaced, however waiting is the worst thing you can do. Depending on what type of insulation is used and if it is just one layer or two it could leak for months before showing signs of leakage. Many times the life of a flat roof can be extended with repairing of seams and penetrations. For a cost the faction of a roof replacement striping out seams and penetrations will add years to the life of a roof. In many cases we have offered warrantys to the building owners after doing such maintenance.

Though the conditions weren't the best, these four skylights had to be installed before the storm hit. Dome skylights are often used on commercial buildings, with flat roofs. They allow great natural light to enter the building through the roof.
